Detroit Zoo’s $20 Million Erb Discovery Trails Sets New Standard for Immersive Zoo Design

One of the most significant zoo development projects opening in North America this year is putting a spotlight on the full spectrum of zoo supplier categories, From animal habitat specialists and aquatic life support systems to interactive play equipment and accessibility design.

The Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails at the Detroit Zoo is a $20 million, 7-acre project set to open on 23 May 2026, over Memorial Day weekend. The development represents the completion of a 20-year master plan for the Royal Oak facility, and its scope is broad enough to serve as a useful benchmark for zoo operators and their supply chains globally.

The trails are designed around hands-on animal interaction, featuring a stingray and bamboo shark touch pool at Stingray Cove, goat interaction areas, and habitats for giant anteaters, burrowing owls, prairie dogs, and alpacas. The aquatic elements alone represent a significant procurement exercise, requiring purpose-built tank infrastructure, life support systems, and specialist feeding equipment for the stingray habitat.

Beyond the animal experiences, the site incorporates an elevated canopy trail, a rain garden, sensory-friendly quiet spaces, and ADA-accessible pathways throughout, reflecting the wider industry shift towards inclusive design as a core procurement requirement rather than an afterthought. A VR attraction called Wild Explorer adds a digital layer to the experience, pointing to the growing role of immersive technology suppliers within modern zoo environments.

The Detroit Zoological Society described the project as one of the most substantial in the Zoo’s history and for enclosure designers, enrichment product suppliers, aquatic specialists and play equipment manufacturers, it represents exactly the type of large-scale, multi-discipline procurement project that defines the current direction of the zoological sector.
